He was an Armenian Catholicos since 717, one of the most prominent representatives of the clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
During the times of Arabic Khalifat rule he tried to strengthen the Armenian Church positions.In 719 he visited Omar Khalif in Damascus and promised him the obedience of the Armenians.
He has struggled against the Pavlikyan movement, organized a church meeting in 726 in Manazkert, which ratified the unity of the Armenian and Assyrian churches. He has also struggled against the Chalcedonic church influence and for this purpose he wrote the first in the Armenian reality “Armenian Code”.Hovhannes Odznetsi is also famous as a writer, author of many speeches, analyses on rituals, etc.
